Legacy
This section has gathered writings from a disparate field of contributors to illustrate two things:
• the incredibly productive and rich period of time during José’s activism that other activists, academics, community members and others wrote and created literature and theory specifically about the issues that were central to the issues promoted in his practice;
• that José directly impacted some of the authors in how they framed, or began to frame, some of the issues/problems they were tackling, e.g. such as over a dozen activists and leaders that wrote their doctoral dissertations about Puerto Rican Cultural Center programs or issues relevant to the Puerto Rican enclave of Humboldt Park (and in some cases over the same period of time in Puerto Rican communities across the US)
• that in the same period of time, as part of a continuity of intergenerational activism, the cumulative effect of which impacted the growth of consciousness, culture, the formulation of tactics and strategic outlooks, on issues like housing, healthcare, education and racism, a “perfect storm” of conditions came together to lay the foundation for a flowering of institutions, committees, parades, and activism that all exuberantly proclaimed the defiant existence and eruption of our relentless struggle for self-determination.
